Tracking and using data to create meaningful patterns that inform future marketing endeavors. The data can come from website traffic, conversions, social media, etc.

Analytics measure five key components:

  1. Overall traffic
  2. Bounce rate
  3. Traffic sources
  4. Desktop vs. mobile users
  5. New and returning visitors

Analytics show how users interact with the content, whether by seeing how long a visitor stays on the page (as well as how long he is inactive on the page), or how he navigates the site. It’s helpful to know, for instance, the rate of desktop to mobile users in determining how mobile friendly a site needs to be. All of this information is useful in marketing strategies and deciding how to best engage (and reach) your users and customers.

Business pages on social media also offer analytics. Facebook, for instance, offers a page that provides information regarding reach, engagement, and actions.
