VR headsets have been generating a lot of buzz because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up allowing us to enter more immersive digital worlds. With Meta changing its very name to reflect its new focus on building its metaverse, offering VR headsets seemed like the logical next step. Research from Counterpoint has revealed that the Quest 2 VR headset offered by Meta performed quite well in 2021.The total shipments that this headset managed to receive amounted to well over 10 million units, or 10.4 million to be precise. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that this made it the most popular VR product of last year by far. Coming in at second place was Sony’s PlayStation VR. It received 6.6 million shipments which is solid but it was clearly outmatched by the Quest 2 which suggests that Meta might have a path forward from the quagmire it is currently sinking into.In spite of the fact that this is the case, the Quest 2 was first launched in 2020, so it isn’t exactly a new product. However, the success that this product saw last year would make Meta eager to launch a new version, and predictions estimate that this new product launch will occur at some point in 2023.

2022 is expected to continue the growth that this product has seen, with projections suggesting a total of 12 million shipments this year. As supply chain crunches slowly get sorted out, more people might be able to buy these headsets because they would be more widely available in stores with all things having been considered and taken into account.70% of its shipments went to the US, so this might not turn out to be a global trend that Meta was hoping to create. Regardless, Meta has clearly managed to become the dominant player in the VR market and no one on the horizon seems to have what it takes to give them any serious competition.Read next: VR Headsets Fail to Compete With Smartphones Despite Strong Growth
